Overview

As I Remember It
is a retrospective illustration project rooted in the particular disorientation of leaving home young, moving somewhere far away, somewhere culturally foreign, and slowly losing your grip on what home means.

Each return visit brings a strange politeness. A growing distance from the streets you grew up on, the city that was once just background. What remains are fragments: a phrase someone said, a photograph, an object that lived on a desk. Familiar and unrecognisable at once.

All the objects made small.

The flickering,
traffic-heavy lights of a hometown boulevard compressed into a blind box,
something you can carry with you,
something to reach for when the feeling arrives.

My mother used to buy iron-on patches printed with the letters of my childhood nickname,
then sew them onto my clothes alongside buttons she'd collected over time.

In this piece,
the scale is deliberately wrong,
the buttons enlarged,
the proportions shifted from anything real,
and they move slowly toward me.

A little closer than they were.
